Education & Teaching Experience

Raised in Chester County, I attended Great Valley schools and was proud to have been an NHS scholar, National Merit Semi-Finalist, and student newspaper editor in high school.

I have a BA from Franklin & Marshall College where I dual-majored in English and Psychology, have an MA in Counseling Psychology from Connecticut College, and am completing another MA in Special Education at the University of Kansas.

Since 1993, I have taught in a variety of classroom settings. I have taught secondary math, prepared adults for the GED and helped them to improve their basic math and literacy skills, and taught all four grade levels of English at an online school. I served as a 9th grade English teacher and Special Education case manger at a school in Philadelphia before transitioning to the Chester Upland School District. Since 2013, I have taught 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grade English, Honors English, Public Speaking and currently teach 8th grade Writing.

Tutoring Experience

I was the youngest tutor ever hired at Franklin & Marshall's famed Writing Center--igniting a passion for tutoring and helping others that ultimately lead to a career in education.

I went on to tutor undergraduates and Coast Guard Cadets while in graduate school, and I then tutored for a number of franchise and privately-owned tutoring companies where I worked with students of all ages on everything from phonics and beginning reading skills to math, organizational skills, study skills, and test preparation. Until the legendary Achievement House Tutoring in Bryn Mawr closed its doors in 2009, I served as its Head Test Prep Tutor and Managing Director.

Over the decades, I have helped hundreds of students from every local district and many private schools including: The Hill School, The Haverford School, The Shipley School, Episcopal Academy, Academy of Notre Dame de Namur, The Agnes Irwin School, The Baldwin School, Woodlynde School, The Phelps School, Devon Preparatory School, Sacred Heart Academy, Friends Central School, Benchmark School, AIM Academy, Malvern Preparatory School, Villa Maria Academy High School, St. Joseph's Preparatory School, Delaware Valley Friends School, and the French International School of Philadelphia.

My "Magic"

Ask around--"generations" of Main Line families have success stories to tell about their tutoring or test preparation experience with "Jen The Tutor"--even if they are not sure of my actual last name.

The secret to my success is simple: tutoring is personal. I am personally invested in your child's success and will personalize every session to meet the specific needs of your child.

I am a "kid whisperer"-- have a unique ability to forge a connection with my students and to create a learning space where students feel safe to ask questions, take risks, and take ownership of their learning.

When it comes to test preparation, one size does NOT fit all, and all materials are NOT created equally. I will create an individualized plan of attack for any standardized exam, and I use only authentic materials created by the tests' publishers. Since 1993 I have successfully prepared students for the 11 Plus, ACT, GED, GMAT, GRE, HSPT, ISEE, Keystone, PRAXIS, PSAT, PSSA, SAT, SSAT, and many other standardized tests.
